It's not always known, but anti-lock braking was first developed for airplanes in the 1920s to prevent skidding on landing. The ABS block regulates the amount of deceleration of each wheel by adapting the level of pressure applied. Because too much pressure on the brake pedal can cause the wheels to lock up.
